Matthews: Hillary’s succeeding because Bill ‘messed around

On MSNBC’s Morning Joe today, Chris Matthews baselessly claimed that the only reason Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-NY) is running for President is because of her husband’s affairs:

Matthews: I think the Hillary appeal has always been about the mix of toughness and sympathy. Let’s not forget, and I’ll be brutal, the reason she’s a US Senator, the reason she’s a candidate for President, the reason she may be a front runner, is that her husband messed around. […]

That’s how she got to be a Senator from New York. We keep forgetting it. She didn’t win it on her merit, she won because everybody felt, “My God, this woman stood up under humiliation,” right? That’s what happened.

As ThinkProgress has tracked in the past, Matthews has consistently been obsessed with Clinton’s sex life.

Hillary couldn't possibly be a Senator because people actually voted for her based on merits. Hillary couldn't possibly be a Presidential candidate because she wants to or because people want her to run. Hillary most certainly couldn't possibly be a front runner or the President because people want her. It must be because Bill had affairs. Yep!! People feel sorry for her because her husband cheated. Using that logic, every person who has ever been cheated on could and would be a U.S. Senator, and a candidate for President.

This couldn't possibly be sour grapes over her win in New Hampshire, and because the polls were proven wrong when Barack Obama got his ass kicked!! It certainly sounds like it!!
